    Huperzine A is a cognitive enhancer that inhibits enzymes that degrade the learning neurotransmitter acetylcholine. It belongs to the cholinergic class of molecules that may help combat cognitive decline in the elderly. 
    Huperzine A is a compound extracted from the huperzine family. It's called an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor, which means it prevents the enzyme from breaking down acetylcholine, leading to an increase in acetylcholine. 
    Acetylcholine is called a learning neurotransmitter and is also involved in muscle contractions. 
    Huperzine A appears to be a relatively safe compound. Toxicity and human studies from animal studies have shown no side effects at conventional supplemental doses. Huperzine A is also being used in preliminary trials to prevent Alzheimer's disease. 
    Huperzine A occurs in cerebrospinal fluid and easily crosses the blood-brain barrier. 
    Huperzine A is best known as an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor. In particular, it inhibits the G4 subtype of acetylcholinesterase, which is common in mammalian brains. It is more effective or equally effective against other acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, such as tacillin or rivastatin. As an inhibitor, it has a high affinity for acetylcholinesterase.
